Chute Film Coop is honoured to present two films by David Wojnarowicz, in collaboration with the David Wojnarowicz Foundation, P·P·O·W New York and Chills and Quills.

The programme brings together A Fire in My Belly and When I Put My Hands on Your Body, in celebration of Wojnarowicz’s legacy and his unwavering commitment as an activist. These two works explore the central themes of masculinity and the body, which were so vital to Wojnarowicz's artistic practice, through distinct aesthetic and formal approaches.

A Fire in My Belly is a political and almost essay-like piece that offers a raw, sociological meditation on identity, spirituality and the destructiveness of industrialised society. At the same time, it celebrates the vibrant pageantry, social rituals and religious traditions of working-class Mexican cultures, as well as the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity.

In contrast, When I Put My Hands on Your Body is a more intimate visual poem centred on two tender, mournful and deeply personal bodies. It is a quiet and honest symphony of lust.

This screening coincides with what would have been Wojnarowicz’s 70th birthday. In his spirit, and following in the footsteps of his radical artistic and political legacy, we’ve partnered with the Istanbul-based collective
Chills and Quills, who have created a beautiful film catalogue to accompany the programme. Through this collaboration, we aim to draw attention to the recent rise of both state-sponsored and individual anti-queer violence and propaganda, with a particular focus on current events in Turkey.

''When I put my hands on your body on your flesh I feel the history of that body.''
